Inviting your ideas for peace

From Never Again

When Basia Forrest walked into the Quaker Headquarters in London to talk about her art installation, little did she know she was about to be sucked into the 'collaborative juggernaut' that is Never Again International.

In her final exhibition for her MA course at Chelsea College, Basia drew on a history of public art installations that drew attention to peace to create a 'peace post' in a public space. The post (pictured) invites people to give their ideas on large pieces of paper on the following question:

Does anyone have any helpful suggestions for non-violent forms of conflict resolution? On personal, group, national or international level

An article in The Friend magazine led to Quaker support for the post and a new home in Cambridge. It didn't take long for the author of that article and this one to mention Never Again International and before long a spark lit up, with Never Again members creating a list of over 20 locations worldwide where the post could go. After a stint in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, showed that the installation could be more easily installed on a wall and this is the Peace Wall which is expected to feature at the New York City party on 21 September. It is hoped that the messages on walls around the world, which range from simple grafitti to profound suggestions, might start a new exchange of grassroots ideas and will contribute to the realisation of one of Basia's fundamental messages: 'Peace: you may participate'.
