Retreat Programme

This programme will be mirrored in the Virtual retreat and written outcomes of the two will eventually be bought together on the wiki

Day 1: Global Power Relationships - 12 Years After the Genocide

Who runs the world, who's changing the world, and how they're changing the world.

We would like to get together to think big about how global outcomes are shaped; what the forces are that shape them; and what your own role is in these processes. To do this we will begin small, with perspectives from our own experiences and histories. We would like to ask you to prepare a rigorously thought out critique of your sphere of the world - whether that is your world of work, your region of interest, or sector of society etc. What are the power structures which influence outcomes in that sphere? What outcomes are made possible and impossible because of those forces?  What are the barriers created by those power structures to peace?  We would like you to identify the power relationships which create opportunities and barriers to their visions for positive political change. What are the national, regional and international barriers to putting humanity at the core of conflict prevention, of development and of politics itself?

Your presentation can be between 5 and 10 minutes long.

By the end of Day One, we hope to have mapped out and debated the major power structures which are creating decisions and outcomes in the world, viewed from the worlds of politics, development, the media, international economics etc.

Day 2: An Emerging Agenda

During day two we will brainstorm the emerging opportunities, threats and potential crises that we see in the future, and the critical shaping events that are coming up. We will identify principal trends and possible scenarios in the coming years; in addition to the key events, elections, summits and deadlines which could determine outcomes or be used as pegs to play out conflicts.

By the end of the day we will hope to have established a time line of the new agendas over the coming years. Again we ask people to prepare a few minutes of material drawing on experience from their sphere, people should feel free to rove beyond this to set out their thoughts on the key issues ahead.

Day 3: How do we Create Change?

What are the macro changes we would like to see happening?

How can we on an individual level; as part of the Never Again network; within our systems of employment: work to bring about these changes?

At the end of the day we will have action agendas that we may each, in different ways, be able to participate in enacting.
